Canisteo Community Garden

2% complete

$10,000 Goal

The Canisteo Community Garden, under the auspices of the Canisteo Community Support Group, began with an idea and a meeting in February, 2026.  By April, the tilling was done, the beds assembled and filled, and the planting began. With the help of the Special Education students at the Canisteo Greenwood Elementary and High Schools who, with the help of their teachers, planted, nurtured and delivered over 200 seedlings of tomatoes, green peppers and cucumbers. Their contribution filled the beds and - there were enough plants left for a fundraiser in June. By October 2nd, 2026 the Garden in its first year, distributed 900.76 pounds of fresh produce to the residents of the area through the Canisteo Food Bank, the Buena Vista Food Pantry and downtown pop-up market tables. Soon, six new beds will be added which will increase the output and the number of people served. We look forward to a successful and more abundant season in 2027!  With that, the Garden will require seeds, compost / soil and fencing to keep out the deer who now believe they have their own private buffet!  And though this year's harvest is coming to a close, you'll see that we're still nurturing our local pollinators who are enjoying the bounties of the zinnia, marigolds, and nasturtium! (Check out our pictures!)  We're grateful for all our volunteers and thank you in advance for your anticipated support!
