WHO ARE THE CANTATA SINGERS?

Founded in Elmira in 1964, the Cantata Singers continue to be a community minded, family-like choir of volunteer singers who love making music together and love sharing that music with our community. As we always have, the current group continues to perform at least 3 times each year, offering those performances without charge and in various locations in the Elmira-Corning-Watkins Glen area so that our performances can be available to as diverse an audience as possible. While we have performed mainly classical music from much of the last 500 years, recent performances have focused on more recent music including new music written specifically for us that tells stories of people who live in our region of upstate New York.

REHEARSALS

Everyone is welcome to sing with us! We meet most Sundays from 6:00 to 8:30 pm starting in early September through our final season performance in May or June with time off around major holidays. We meet in the Parish Hall at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 408 S. Main St. Horseheads, across from the public library. We accept new singers for the first few weeks of preparation for any concert. We are a fun-loving but hard working bunch of singers. If you sing, please consider singing with us! Whether you sing or not, please consider supporting us and our mission of providing free and accessible concerts to all people who live in or near the Southern Finger Lakes region.

Who We Are

The Cantata Singers is a community-based choir offering local residents the opportunity to perform, and/or hear, great classical choral works. Since the beginning, we have performed nearly 200 free concerts throughout the area. Our season typically consists of three performances, an Advent-Christmas concert in December, a performance in late February or March, and another in May or June. Concerts are likely to include anything from Bach or the Renaissance masters to the works of contemporary composers. Sacred or secular music, works intended for the concert stage, church, synagogue, or cultural festival is all fair game. We strive to collaborate with local community organizations on issues of importance such as Alzheimer/dementia awareness, environmental concerns and other ways our music speaks to and supports topics of interest.
