"Her First Finish Line"

An Impact Story from Girls on the Run of the Southern Tier

When 9-year-old Maya joined Girls on the Run of the Southern Tier, she barely spoke above a whisper. She often kept to herself at school and had trouble making friends. Running? That wasn’t even on her radar.

But something changed when she stepped onto the field that first chilly spring afternoon. The coaches greeted her by name, the other girls shared nervous giggles and encouragement, and for the first time, Maya didn’t feel invisible.

As the weeks went by, Maya didn’t just grow stronger physically—she began to shine. Through activities that combined movement with thoughtful discussion, she learned how to express her feelings, stand up for herself, and support others. She learned that her voice mattered.

The 5K Celebration day arrived, Maya’s family and friends stood on the sidelines in awe. Their shy daughter stood at the starting line, eyes bright, surrounded by teammates who had become sisters. As she crossed the finish line, hand-in-hand with her running buddy, tears streamed down her face—and theirs. It wasn’t just a race. It was a triumph.
